Your friends might be astonished at the number of people who are at the edge of being homeless in Fairbanks. Hundreds of families lack supportive services when their family members experience mental illness, a disability, or traumatic event. The Fairbanks Housing and Homeless Coalition (FHHC) is dedicated to increasing access to affordable housing and supportive services for people who experience barriers to housing.

Your donation allows FHHC to assess the needs of at-risk individuals and coordinate resources for those who are in need of a safe housing. You are invited to help create a wider base of support of our 10-year plan to end homelessness through collaboration with other agencies and individuals in our community. Together we can address the major elements of concern: substance abuse, mental illness, disability, trauma, family violence, underemployment, and difficult family situations. All these can prevent basic needs being met, with lack of housing being a major symptom. We know of 398 individuals in the Fairbanks area who are homeless and have sought services. Many more go unnoticed and unserved.

In 2010, FHHC developed a plan to end homelessness and increase community awareness. The coalition’s inaugural event was Project Homeless Connect and Point in Time Count, an event that counts the number of homeless individuals at a point in time. FHHC has conducted the homeless census every year since its inception.

The FHHC has been instrumental in facilitating discussions that have led to projects like Housing First and The Door, an emergency youth shelter and currently the development of a Sobering Center. The past few years the FHHC has been building structure and capacity to create long term sustainability. Our most recent milestone was recent approval of the Homeless and Housing Coordinator position in collaboration with the City of Fairbanks as well as a VISTA project through the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

Your contribution can aid these efforts to demonstrate the need for more services to assist young and old alike in finding shelter and safe, stable housing.
